Our Athletes

Steve Larsen

Steve was a member of the 2006 Canadian Winter Olympics Team that competed in Torino, Italy in the Four-Man Bobsleigh competition. The Canada-Two sled that Steve pushed finished 17th overall in the Olympics. Steve has competed at a world class level in bobsleigh for both of the two years he has participated in the sport. Previously, Steve competed as a 100m and 200m sprinter, capturing the provincial 100m championship for three consecutive years (2002, 2003 and 2004) in BC. He has placed in the top 10 at the National Track and Field Championships for a number of years in both the 100m and 200m. Steve has recently been recovering from the surgical removal of a brain tumor (acoustic neuroma) and is working hard to make a gold-medal comeback for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver in bobsleigh.

Nathan Taylor

Nathan is one of the top 100m sprinters in Canada, placing 8th at the recent Canadian Championships. His time of 10.36 seconds ranks him 7th overall in the 100m event in Canada. Nathan was also a member of the bronze medal winning 4x100m relay team at the 2006 Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne, Australia in March. This was Canada’s first relay medal at a major games since 1997. Nathan is working towards the 100m and 4x100m relay events for the 2008 Olympics to be held in Beijing, China. In 2007, Nathan will be working towards the Pan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro and the World Track and Field Championships in Osaka, Japan. His bio on Athletics Canada can be found here.

Mike Giuffre

Mike is the reigning 100m BC Champion, capturing the Provincial title in 10.87 seconds. Although Mike has only been seriously training in the 100m for the last 2 seasons, he has shown incredible promise. His times have improved significantly each year and his full potential is yet to be seen.

Anna Hilborn

Anna is a former collegiate soccer and volleyball star and has shifted her focus to the 400m and 800m events in track. With only a few months of track training under her belt, Anna posted highly competitive times in these events. Anna has also participated in training camps in Calgary for Skeleton, a winter Olympics event. We anticipate that Anna will have a breakthrough year this season once she develops a greater base of training for her events.

Brett Robinson

Brett made the switch to Metro Athletics in 2006 after spending two years competing for Simon Fraser University . While running for SFU, he helped the 4X100m relay team make it to the NAIA finals for the first time in school history while establishing a new school record and being named an NAIA All-American. Before deciding to focus on track full time, Brett was blue-chip football prospect. In 2002/03, as a true freshman, he started every game for the University of Ottawa ; leading the team in punt and kickoff returns. In high school, his honors include being named 3rd team All-Canadian (football), 1st team-All-West (football) and provincial 100m champion.

Emily Johnson

Emily was the 2003 Canadian Junior Champion in 200m. She was also a member of the 2003 World Youth Championship team in Sherbrooke, QC (200m, relay) and a member of the 2004 World Junior Championship team in Grosseto, Italy (200m, 4x100m)

Charles Wlodarczak

Former trackster turned skeleton, Charles has produced several trips to the podium in Calgary this past winter at the provincial and National level.

Corporate Sponsorships

With limited sources of funding via government sports agencies, we are actively seeking support from the corporate community to provide our athletes with the means to train, compete and win at the Olympic and world-class level. With the Vancouver 2010 Olympics almost upon us, the public interest in the achievements of our local amateur athletes continues to grow. Thus, we see the next few years as critical to establishing successful relationships with corporations in an effort to show the world that British Columbians can reach the top of the podium..
